Légende au verso : "Passenger for a prison ship. La Rochelle, France. French convicts are taken from vans for transportation to the Island prison of Saint-Martin-de-Ré. The 673 criminals from prisons in all parts of France who were concentrated there were then placed on the prison ship Martiniere and sent to Devil's Isalnd. The reform of three years age which put an end to the transportation of convicts to the french penal colony in French Guiana has been held up beacause there is not now available enough money to build the extra prison needed for french criminals.
