Au cours des années 1880-1900, les méthodes et techniques d’identification développées par Alphonse Bertillon sont progressivement adoptées et utilisées par les institutions répressives en France et à travers le monde entier.
Dès les années 1890, le principe du classement anthropométrique des fiches de policières d’identification appliqué à Paris est cependant concurrencé par l’emploi des empreintes digitales qui permet la constitution de systèmes dactyloscopiques alternatifs d’organisation des fichiers.
Des recherches conduites notamment en Grande-Bretagne et dans l’empire britannique par William Herschel, Henry Faulds, Edward Henry et Francis Galton, en Argentine par Juan Vucetich ou en Italie par Giovanni Gasti révèlent la grande importance de l’exploitation des empreintes des doigts en matière d’identification des personnes.
